Main Street Medina

Welcome to Main Street Medina, an official Ohio Main Street Program (www.heritageohio.org). Organized in December, 2007, Main Street Medina will focus revitalization efforts on the central business district around the historic Square. By sponsoring exciting events and programs, supporting community based development, recruiting new businesses to the Square while supporting existing businesses and improving the quality of life, Main Street Medina will give you many more reasons to return to the Square!

A little Main Street history:
In the 1970s, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (www.nationaltrust.org) developed its pioneering Main Street approach to commercial district revitalization, an innovative methodology that combines historic preservation with economic development to restore prosperity and vitality to downtowns and neighborhood business districts. It has created a network of more than 40 statewide, citywide, and countywide Main Street programs with more than 1,200 active Main Street programs nationally.

The Main Street Four-Point Approach™ (www.mainstreet.org) is a community-driven, comprehensive approach used to revitalize older, traditional business districts throughout the United States. It is a common-sense way to address the variety of issues and problems that face traditional business districts. It encompasses work in four distinct areas — Design, Economic Restructuring, Promotion, and Organization — that are combined to address all of the commercial district's needs. The Main Street Approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets: distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community.

The philosophy and the Eight Guiding Principles  behind this methodology make it an effective tool for community-based, grassroots revitalization efforts. The Main Street approach has been successful in communities of all sizes, both rural and urban.

The Economic Restructuring Committee will:
  • Analyze the current business mix in the historic district, and support landlords in new business recruitment
  • Complete a strategic plan for the business district
  • Partner with the City and County Economic development departments to implement way-finding and signage around the historic district
Organization/Membership/Fundraising will:
  • Create and establish a fundraising committee to support Main Street Medina programs
  • Create an interactive website to promote and inform the community on Main Street Medina activities
  • Conduct a strategic planning session to detail the needs of the community and the historic business district
  • Conduct a commercial open house to raise awareness of the business opportunities
The Promotions Committee will:
  • Sponsor and develop ongoing programs and events to raise funds for Main Street Medina as well as to improve resident and tourism retail trade
  • Partner with Organization and Membership to create an outstanding website for Main Street Medina
  • Foster relationships with other arts and development organizations to create an historic district Calendar of Events
The Design Committee will:
  • Increase the level and amount of holiday decorations installed on the Square for the winter holiday season
  • Investigate decorative, year-round banners to accent the historic district
  • Improve the annual plantings on and around the square to increase the attractive and park-like environment
  • Support merchants with workshops in visual display and appropriate signage
