University of Akron Steel Drum Band Concert Wildly Successful for Main Street Medina
(Medina, Ohio- October 28, 2008) – On October 25, 2008, The University of Akron Steel Drum Band had the nearly 200 member audience on their feet and dancing to the engaging rhythms of the Caribbean during their command return performance. Presented by Main Street Medina, the Steel Drum Band concert was the second in a four-concert World Tour of Music Concert Series.
The stage was filled with the talent of over 20 band members, all University of Akron music majors, under the esteemed direction of Matt Dudak. The band, founded in 1980 by Dr. Larry Snider, is one of the nation’s oldest collegiate panorama style steel bands. All of the band’s steel drum instruments are built from 55-gallon metal drums by Cliff Alexis, a master tuner, arranger, and composer.
Main Street Medina kicked off its inaugural World Tour of Music Series in September with a concert by Sedmara Zakarian Rutstein. Professor Rutstein performed works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov. Rutstein was thrilled to be making her Medina debut. A tenured Professor of Piano at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Rutstein has received critical acclaim in the U.S., Europe, Russia, Hong Kong and China.
The series continues with concerts by The Maiden’s IV on February 7th, 2009. These four sisters from Loudonville, OH, will share Celtic and Irish favourites with amazing vocal clarity and harmony. The series wraps up on April 4th, 2009, with a rousing performance by Ernie Krivda and the Big Easy Jazz Band, featuring traditional and contemporary New Orleans-styled jazz.
