Main Street Medina Announces National Accreditation
(January 30, 2013- Medina)
Main Street Medina is proud to announce that for the 5th year in a row they have received State and National standing as an accredited Main Street Program. Using the national review guidelines of the National Main Street Center in Washington, D.C., the local program was reviewed by State
Coordinator, Jeff Siegler of Heritage Ohio, on Thursday, January 24th. Throughout the morning, board members, committee chairs, government officials
and committee volunteers talked through the successes and challenges of 2012. Each committee reviewed its workplans and walked the State reviewer through their goals and achievements. Overall, the program review earned a 97% out of 100%, putting them in the top 5% of Main Street Programs State-wide.
“In just five years, Medina has grown into one of the strongest Main Street Programs in the State of Ohio,”commented Mr. Siegler at the end of the review.
“Most communities take at least two years to achieve accreditation, but Medina earned it their first year, and they have continued to earn the achievement
every year. At the State level, we often cite program initiatives and outcomes from Medina as benchmarks for every program. We’ve also used several of the
official documents like board agreements, by-laws, and financial policies as examples or templates for new communities considering joining the Main Street
Program.”
Highlights from the 2012 review focused on the achievements in expanding district marketing in the region and across the Midwest, including
a May 2012 feature article in Akron Life& Leisure Magazine, in partnership with City of Medina Economic Development department, that reached
over 20,000 readers. In December of 2012, Medina was listed as one of the 25 Top Holiday Destinations by Midwest Living Magazine, largely due to
the Candlelight Walk activities, but particularly because of the investment by the City of Medina in holiday lighting for the district, and by SUMMA Health
System for sponsoring six weekends of activities and entertainment in the nine block historic district.
Other initiatives that supported national accreditation included the opening of more than 8 new businesses in the District, a significantly decreased vacancy rate, the partnership with the City and Friends of the Cemetery to continue the restoration of the headstones at Old Town Graveyard, the expansion of
beautification initiatives, additional promotional activities and major events on the Square, and the outreach to the business community to partner on
marketing support and joint advertising.
