John Smart House Museum
Medina County Historical Society
206 N. Elmwood Avenue

The John Smart House is an elegant Victorian home, featuring eleven rooms designed for the period. The Eastlake style house has a square conical tower, several porches, pierced Eastlake-decorated trim and stained-glass windows.
Built in 1886 by John Smart for his wife, Julia, and daughters, Anna and Maud. Both daughters were married in the front parlor. The house was then purchased by Orlo and Adelaide Jackson who lived in the house until 1913.  William Baldwin, editor of the Gazette, and his family lived in the home until it was purchased by the Hammerschmidt family who lived there until the 1930's.
The house became a rental and hosted the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Around 1950, the home housed Medina County Board of Education. In 1985, the Medina County Historical Society took over the house and restored it to its original splendor.
The John Smart House Museum is home to a permanent display of Victorian furnishings collected during the Society’s 100+ years. Memorabilia include items from the Seville Giants and a fine stained-glass sign from the Longacre furniture store once on Medina Square. The museum offers special exhibits and contains the Society’s holdings and resource materials.
