2023 Annual Meeting
WThe 2023 Annual Meeting of Main Street Medina was held on Wednesday, January 24 at Williams on the Lake. The annual event honors our members, donors, volunteers, and partners as well as highlights the results from the 2023 program.
Eric Stasiowski, MSM board chairperson, called the meeting to order and presented Mayor Dennis Hanwell for City of Medina remarks. Executive Director, George Sam and Events Director Angela Mansier reflected on 2023 activities and events, as well as plans for 2024. Eric reviewed the 3-year strategic plan with our mission, vision and strategy through 2024, presented our outgoing board members Amy Demlow, Brad Root, Jon Stahl, Leslie Traves, Stephanie Richardson with awards presented for their service. Eric also introduced our new board of directors: Sam Custer, Easton Saltsman, and Jake Emling. Kevin Hutchinson and Tracey Ruffin were voted in as board members at the Jan. 25 meeting. Matt Liegl will replace Brad Root as Vice President in 2024. The current board members can be found on this website under Our Organization. 2023 Annual Awards
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD - BRAD ROOT Brad Root has served as a Main Street Medina board member and volunteer since 2018 and more recently as vice president and on the Economic Vitality Committee. Brad is the great-great grandson of Amos Ives Root, who founded the A.I. Root Company in 1869 and is now the President and Chairman of the Board of Root Candles, and President of the National Candle Association. We can always count on Root Candles to sponsor and support events like Candlelight Walk. Brad also serves at the UCC Church, the Medina Chamber, Medina Hospital Board, City of Medina Economic Development, Leadership Medina County, the American Heart Association-Medina Heart Walk, and the Boy Scouts Great Trails Council-Chippewa District. Brad is here tonight with wife Kathy and daughter Emilie. We are proud to honor Bead Root with the 2023 Volunteer of the Year Award. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - KAITLYN SULIKS Main Street Medina is honored to present Kaitlyn Suliks with the 2023 Student Volunteer of the Year Award. Kaitlyn is a Medina High School sophomore student who started volunteering in the past couple of years. In that short time, she has made herself invaluable at any event, under any situation. "No job was too big or too small for her - and I knew if I explained a project to her, gave her some other students to help, she would lead them to the project’s completion. We wish I could have five Kaitlyns at every event," says Angela Mansier. RETAIL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - SPORTSWORLD CIA Sportsworld Custom Imprinted Apparel located at 213 South Court Street provides custom garment screen printing and embroidery for sports teams, corporate wear, fundraising, and more at the highest quality for the fairest prices since 1997. Sportsworld is known for their wide variety of Medina “Spirit-wear” sold at their retail and online stores. They take pride in their commitment to customer service and has provided years of personal service and in-kind donations to Main Street Medina and other local organizations. Main Street Medina recognizes Sportsworld’s longtime employees Jen Harris and Karen Kemp, and 2023 owners Ameena and Bill Hoshaw as 2023 Retail Business of the Year. And we wish all the best to the new owners Carrie and Brett Robertson. RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR - JANES DINER Jane Kokolari along with her husband and chef, Emil and daughter Alexandra are owners of Jane’s Diner at 115 Public Square featuring American diner staples and Eastern European classics since 2022. Jane says that traditional Eastern Europeans didn't eat out because home-cooked meals were "so much better." So now they bring their cultural cuisine to you! As a side note, Jane’s Diner received the most customer passports entered during Restaurant Week in 2023. We are honored to award Jane’s Diner the 2023 Restaurant of the Year. Jane also brought here staff to the Awards Dinner and Casino Night as a thanks for all they do! SERVICE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - CRITCHFIELD, CRITCHFIELD & JOHNSTON Critchfield, Critchfield, and Johnston is a law firm deeply rooted in Northeast Ohio dating back to the Civil War era They believe in advancing a culture of diversity and inclusion and advocates for dignity, respect, and fairness in the workplace and in serving clients. Attorney Amy Demlow has been a Main Street Medina board member and volunteer since 2020. Critchfield attorney Easton Saltsman has served as Organization chair of MSM since 2020 and is a new board member this year. Critchfield continues to provide legal assistance and policy review as well as financial and volunteer support to Main Street Medina. Because of their longstanding and continued partnership, we are honored to present Critchfield, Critchfield, and Johnston with the 2023 Service Business of the Year Award. NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - JG PROMOTIONS JG Promotions is the brainchild of Sheena Cloninger. Along with business partner and friend Jackie Haverty, Sheena started this craft and vendor events coordinating company after over 20 years in the hospitality industry. Sheena came to Medina in 2016 and Jackie about 15 years ago. In 2022, they took over management of the Mill Street Makers Market. Since then, Sheena and Jackie opened JG South Town Market on Lafayette Street last year offering products and from local artists and makers. By the way, JG stands for “ Jersey Girl,” honoring Sheena’s roots. JG Promotions also produces annual arts and crafts shows at the Medina County Fairgrounds. Main Street Medina is honored to recognize Sheena Cloninger and Jackie Hagerty of JG Promotions as the 2022 New Business of the Year. NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR AWARD - CUPS CAFE Cups Café at 126 North Court Street is a faith-based nonprofit that provides anyone in need with a free meal – whether you struggle with food insecurity, homelessness, or just need a friend and a little help. During the school year, the café transforms into a student only space after 2pm to provide kids with a good meal. Cups Café relies on volunteers and cash and food donations from local individuals, churches, businesses and organizations. Cups now provides a pantry, shower and personal hygiene products to anyone who needs it. Executive Director Cindy Maxwell is the force behind the mission and is personally devoted to loving one another and honoring others above ourselves. Main Street Medina is proud to partner with Cups Café and is honored to present the 2023 Non-Profit of the Year Award to Cindy and the amazing board and volunteers of Cups Cafe. PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD - CITY OF MEDINA - The City of Medina has been a partner of Main Street Medina since our inception in 2007. Although local governments are expected to endorse Main Street Programs, the City of Medina has embraced our program as an important part of the community and economic development mix. We are proud of our relationship with Mayor Dennis Hanwell, City Council, and Department staff who goes above and beyond to provide financial support, professional guidance, and invaluable staff assistance for our projects, events and activities. In turn, we trust that our board, committees, staff and volunteers continue to provide the City with the support it needs to preserve our historic assets, grow and retain small business, and attract visitors to the best small town in Ohio. We are proud to present the Partnership of the Year Award to Mayor Dennis Hanwell and the City of Medina. |
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD - BARBARA DZUR
Barbara Dzur works for the City of Medina as the Economic Development and Marketing Manager, she is also grantwriter, coordinator of the Medina City Guide, and special events coordinator for the Solar Eclipse event and last year’s Great Race. She is a longtime member of Main Street Medina, serving as past board member and secretary, and Organization and Business Development Committees. She was also interim Executive Director at one time. She currently serves on the Promotions Committee and South Town Music Festival team and is a supporting member of Heritage Ohio. Barbara is a lifetime member of the Medina County Historical Society, and founding member of the Medina County Women’s Endowment and current advisor on the Medina Co. Community Foundation Board, founding member of Leadership Medina Co., and Medina Co. Women’s Network. Barbara was the first recipient of the Athena Leadership Award at age 11 (lol). On a personal note, Barbara is always a phone call away to share her vast knowledge … and keeps me grammatically correct (the English teacher in her)!
