MSM Annual Meeting & Awards Celebration, Williams on the Lake
Each year, Main Street Medina recognizes individuals and businesses that bring the organizations mission statement to life. Here are our award recipients for 2024 ...
2024 Annual Awards
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD - SCOTT DILLON Scott Dillon has volunteered hours of his time helping out at the Farmers Markets collecting visitor data and working at Signature Events in 2024. Scott also has been instrumental in helping us collect and analyze Visitor data using PlacerAI creating a “data lake” of information from our events such as visitor counts, zip codes, and demographics like average ages, incomes, etc. dating back to 2017. Scott worked at Smucker’s since 2014 in various analytical and account management roles, planning and managing the business for their many lines of products. We’re thankful to have Scott’s talents on our team … congratulations!
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - NOAH ABERNATHY Main Street Medina honors Noah as an integral part of our Medina High School student volunteers who gave up his free time at MSM events and the Farmers Markets throughout 2024.
NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR - MEDINA BREAKFAST KIWANIS The Kiwanis believe that “children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. Let us help them to be the change we wish to see in the world.” The Medina Breakfast Kiwanis is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of children and families in the Medina community. Through various service projects and fundraisers, we are able to provide the necessary resources to support our outreach programs. We are proud to support our K-Kids, Key Club, and AKtion clubs in the Medina schools, and our annual Medina County Sports Hall of Fame fundraiser is a highlight of our efforts. Additionally, they support an Aktion Club at the Medina County BDD. As co-founders of the Medina County Sports Hall of Fame, we honor over 30 years of inductees at the Medina City recreation center. Committed to community service, we offer both volunteer work and financial assistance to various organizations like Main Street Medina and volunteer at Feeding Medina County each week.
PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD - CLEVELAND CLINIC MEDINA HOSPITAL Medina Hospital has sponsored and hosted the Annual Health & Wellness Expo at the July Farmers Markets each year to encourage a healthy lifestyle and share medical and social services as an outreach to visitors. We thank them for their continued partnership in these efforts.
COMMUNITY SPIRIT OF THE YEAR AWARD - THE KOCHTANEK FAMILY The Kochtaneks have collectively volunteered for MSM Events and the Farmers Markets as a family. We thank them for making volunteerism and Main Street Medina an important part of their family time!
RETAIL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - THE OLIVE TAP The Olive Tap at 30 Public Square is known for the most unique, flavorful, Award-winning Extra Virgin Olive Oils and balsamic Vinegars available today. Christine has contributed much to Main Street Medina over the years and along with her husband Seth worked at our Ice Cream Socials on Community Band Concert nights this summer selling ice cream and handing out MSM info. Congratulations!
HISTORIC PRESERVATION OF THE YEAR AWARD - 17 PUBLIC SQUARE Jim Hansen and Karen Farley are siblings who own 17 Public Square. In 2024, the façade underwent a restoration from cornice and tile repair to cleaning and painting … the attention to detail and quality of workmanship by local craftsman, James Gaume is top notch. Karen said, she and Jim inherited the building from their dad in 2021 and it has been in their family for 3 generations. Their mother’s family owned it previously and lived in Medina for many years. This facade rehab is a testament to the love the owners have for Medina and this building … To quote Medina historian Bob Hyde in his treasured archival record Beyond the Storefronts, “the space has its own rustic feel, with raw brick walls from the 1870s and stonework from the 1840s downstairs. This building (known as the Ferriman Building) was occupied as a Clothing and Dry Goods store for a consecutive 85 years. The 17 Public Square Restaurant and Bar is a worthy replacement to the 30-year stint by Main Street Café.” Main Street Medina is proud to honor building owners Jim Hansen and Karen Farley with this Historic Preservation of the Year Award.
FACADE IMPROVEMENT OF THE YEAR AWARD - MARK'S CLEANING SERVICE Mark and Bonnie Skoda have been members and supporters of Main Street Medina even before we expanded our footprint into the South Town District. You may recognize Mark as lead vocalist for local rock bands LegendZ and Stylie Wild at the South Town Arts & Music Festival. In 2023, Mark approached us for help with a new façade design that would complement the “industrial style” inspired by the Farmers Exchange rehab and new construction along Mill Street designed by the Simmons Bros. Roger Smalley and I worked with local artist Cindy Allman to recommend styles, colors, and materials. Mark and Bonnie took those designs to their contractor, South Town based Artisan Building and Design, together creating this amazing transformation!
Mark founded his commercial cleaning enterprise in 1984 specializing in carpet and janitorial services. In 1998, they purchased this 5000 sq. ft. facility at 325 S. Elmwood Ave. and added new services expanding to over 100 employee today. We thank Mark and Bonnie, here with their son Brent and contractors for setting the example for well-done design integration and are proud to present you with the 204 Façade Improvement of the Year Award.
BUSINESS EXPANSION OF THE YEAR AWARD #1 - SWEETS & GEEKS Brad Hoisington and Jim McMahan have become an institution in Medina ever since they opened Sweets & Geeks at 342 E Smith Rd. Founded in 2020, Sweets and Geeks is a pop-culture haven for retro and modern memorabilia and candy offering both ‘Sweets’ and 'Geeky' games and collectibles in a friendly, welcoming space. In 2022, they renovated and opened the second half of the building adding 15,000 square feet for a total of seven large rooms.
Last year, they opened a freeze-dry production facility in South Town and leased a warehouse. Since their opening, they’ve expanded to provide even more candy options, a soda shoppe and a large game room, and more games and collectibles. As if that’s not enough, they most recently grew into two new locations at Great Northern Mall and Wayne Towne Plaza! Brad, Jim and their team have always given back to the community providing life-size characters, games and giveaways at our events … and Brad is a member of our Design Committee and South Town team. We are honored to present Sweets & Geeks with the Business Expansion of the Year Award.
BUSINESS EXPANSION OF THE YEAR AWARD #2 - BLACK CAT BOOKS & ODDITIES Having a knack for pop culture definitely runs in the family. Max and Alicia Frazier (sister of Brad Hoisington) have blown us away with another Medina icon – Black Cat Books & Oddities located now at two 100-year-old houses in South Town: 420 S. Court Street and 119 Lafayette Street. Max and Alicia are passionate about good stories! Alicia is a writer by trade and loves literature. Max shared his musical talents at this year’s South Town Music Festival with his band “Pink Maskerade.” Alicia grew up in Medina and wanted to bring her love of great stories to the community and offer a unique experience and something new to discover every time you visit! Black Cat continues to expand with new reading genres and activity rooms for adults and kids alike featuring classic and local authors, fiction and non-fiction, romance and fantasy, and magic and curiosity. We are proud to have these two creative fixtures in South Town as part of the vision to develop an “Arts & Entertainment” District. Congratulations to Alicia and Max on your business expansion!
