MSM Annual Meeting & Awards Celebration, Williams on the Lake
Each year, Main Street Medina honors the notable people, businesses and organizations who made a difference in Medina in 2025. Here are this year's award recipients ...
2025 Annual Awards
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD - SAM CUSTER. Sam is an MSM board member, chairs the Economic Vitality committee, and is a major overall contributor in time and resources to Main Street Medina and the community at large. Not only was Sam resourceful in personally & professionally sponsoring our events, but he also showed me that he is a team player as a volunteer at events. Every time I put out a "call for volunteers," Sam was always one of the 1st Board members to offer his help. We need all kinds of assistance to help us put our plans in motion (financial, leadership, giving of their time, etc.). When we have someone on our team who provides all of the above, we realize how fortunate we are.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - ELI COOPER. Eli is a sophomore at Medina High School. He came to us before his freshman year even started through the Key Club. It didn't take me long to see that Eli would soon become my "go-to" student volunteer when he was on the schedule. He tends to be on the quieter side, but his maturity, dependability and willingness to do whatever task is asked of him made Elit stand out as our Student Volunteer of the Year.
NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR - INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS. As Noble Grand, Glenn Brant says it best, “Our lodge exists to serve. Whether through charitable efforts, support for local causes, or simply being present when our neighbors need us most, we believe that a strong community is built through consistent involvement and genuine care. We are focused not only on honoring the legacy of those who came before us, but also on ensuring that our work today lays an even stronger foundation for the future.” Over the years, we have turned to them to help with activities, and they always come through with a "yes we can" attitude.
PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD - ACME FRESH MARKET. Medina’s Acme Fresh Market is the third store in the grocery chain located at 1225 S. Court St. The family-owned business designed the store with elements of Medina in mind and included Medina-made products like Cool Beans Cafe's coffee and Candyapple & Co. products. Katie Swartz and Camille Renner Coughlin reached out to us to engage in the community. In 2025, they sponsored many of our events and provided funds for projects. We look forward to our continued partnerships with Acme Fresh Market!
COMMUNITY SPIRIT OF THE YEAR AWARD - THE FARMERS MARKET TEAM. We have been working for years to build our volunteer base with people who want to share their love for Medina with our guests. This year’s Farmers Market Team was the "Dream Team!" Angela Mansier, Events Director, shared, "When they were on the schedule, I knew it was going to be a great event. They worked together, slid right into their roles that let each of them shine, and brought joy to everyone they encountered." Congratulations to Linda Taylor, Deborah Fought, Patricia West, Jim Hallis, Scott Dillon, Lawrence Mansier, Lucas Mansier, and Doug McClure, our Community Spirit recipients of 2025.
SPONSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD - TRILLIUM CREEK DERMATOLOGY. Trillium Creek, located at 5783 Wooster Pike, is your solution for any skin concerns like skin diseases, skin cancers, and cosmetic procedures. With more than four decades of experience, they are dedicated to the satisfaction of their clients. For Main Street Medina, Trillium's commitment to sponsoring quality community events that are free to the public such as the Farmers Markets, Ladies Night Out, Candlelight Walk, and more makes a big difference. Their team always comes prepared with positive attitudes and fun activities and giveaways - adding to each event they serve." Thank you to Cheryl Kapusta and her team!
RETAIL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - FARMHOUSE 1834. Farmhouse 1834 relocated to 309 S. Broadway Street in Medina’s South Town District from Olmsted Falls in 2024. Lynn Bracic and Despina Papouras-Simons brought with them their good taste, unique style and elegant decor that would beautify any home. The Farmhouse is located in the former Gingerbread House that was newly renovated by property owner RJ Vernak. Lynn and Despina participated in the South Town Music Festival featuring Sunny Griffith, daughter of Sam Custer, Ladies Nights Out, Fall Festival, and other Promotions Committee activities. If you haven’t been there yet, you need to check it out! Congratulations to Farmhouse 1834, Retail Business of the Year.
NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD - HEMINGWAYS UNDERGROUND. Hemingway’s Underground, located at 236 S. Court Street, opened in August as a meeting place for quiet conversations, handcrafted cocktails, and unique entrees … a place where owners Zane Charnas and Courtney Hunter want every visit to feel like a special occasion. Along with partners Melanie and Matt Strehle, they have truly transformed this space into a cozy getaway reminiscent of a fiction novel. Hemingway’s Underground was featured in our Winter. Wonderful. Medina Campaign highlighting their nostalgic bar, retro vibe, and tasty drinks! Congratulations to Hemingway’s Underground, our New Business of the Year!
RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR AWARD - DOMINIC'S & JOJO'S. Dominic’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant and Jojo’s Sports Bar & Grille at 221 South Jefferson Street are institutions in Medina. Started by Dominic Carrino in 1987, Dominic’s is an independently owned family restaurant who believes that treating customers as family in a friendly atmosphere, makes Medina a great place to live – and dine. In March, 2020, Stuart Mann, with 12 years previous restaurant experience and a former customer of Dominic’s, purchased the restaurant and continues their tradition today. Stu has been a community partner of ours sponsoring and participating in Restaurant Week and most of our Signature events each year. Stu recently gave the restaurant a facelift investing private dollars as part of the Facade Rehab Program. Congratulations to Stuart Mann and Dominic’s & Jojo’s - our Restaurant of the Year.
SERVICE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD - HUNTINGTON BANK. Huntington Bank has been instrumental in our success since our inception in 2007 when the former First Merit Bank VP, Jeff Kehnle and Jeff Palker helped form the Board that launched the Main Street Program in Medina and before that was one of the first to preserve Public Square by restoring the old Phoenix Building to its current grandeur. Today, under the leadership of bank president, Ron Paydo and his team, Huntington Bank is well known for its community service and has been a valued partner of MSM by providing our office rent and utility free since 2016, donating time and resources to our events and projects - most notably Santa’s Workshop during Candlelight Walk, and continuing to serve on our Board (thank you, Kevin Rych!). Huntington Bank in Medina is more than a lending and banking institution, it’s the personal service they provide and the care they give back to the community. As Ron said to me when I announced the award, “We do what we do because it’s the right thing to do to help our community.” Congratulations to Ron Paydo, Kevin Rych, and the Huntington Bank team.
BUSINESS EXPANSION OF THE YEAR AWARD - CASTLE NOEL. Castle Noel opened its doors in 2013. Since then, their unique collections and activities of “all things Christmas” continue to evolve. I saw on Facebook recently, Mark, Dana and their crew in New York City after the holidays around 3am to bring new amazing famous storefront displays to Medina. And let’s not forget that Mark & Dana created Promise of Christmas this past January to recreate Medina’s Candlelight Walk for those who lost so much in the North Carolina flood. In addition to the award-winning museum collections and Alien Vacation Mini Golf, they’ve added the Castle Garden Patio, an island resort oasis with a stage, 20′ waterfall, 12′ fire pit, and heated concrete patio floor. And just this year, they’ve opened a new restaurant called The Starlight Room and the new Gingerbread Theatre starring new animatronics like the giant Yeti. We’re so proud to have Castle Noel, “America’s Largest Year-Round Indoor Christmas Entertainment Attraction” in Medina! Congratulations to Mark & Dana Klaus at Castle Noel for their business expansion.
FACADE FACELIFTS OF THE YEAR AWARDS - SOUTH COURT ST. PROPERTIES. We are extremely pleased with the facade updates at all nine properties that completed work in 2025, however we’d like to recognize the collective impact that was made on the west side of South Court St by three property owners: Riz Saliba, Joann King, and Leslie & Lance Traves. These 150+ year old buildings have housed a variety of businesses since being rebuilt after the fire of 1870 and today they are home to five thriving downtown businesses. Together these individuals invested over $70,000 to repair, paint, and beautify their buildings’ facades. In support, Main Street Medina provided $25,000 in matching funds.
BUILDING REHAB OF THE YEAR AWARD - 400 SOUTH COURT ST LLC. Coleen Mahoney, Will Burtimes, Mary Kay Hallas, and Mike Brock purchased the building that previously housed Kim’s College of Martial Arts and renovated the building, inside and out. The building was split into two distinct spaces, completely updated, and now provides a larger, open, bright space for Bee Well Physical Therapy and a third location for Black Cat Books & Oddities. Coleen shared a vision with Main Street Medina and we were able to partner with the team by providing both a rendering of a revitalized exterior designed by Cindy Allman and matching facade funds.
VISIONARY OF THE YEAR AWARD: It takes a visionary to look at a large vacant office space and see the potential of that same space become a dream-come-true. Kelly has spent decades putting everything into place to re-brand her business when the time was right. Kelly Parks is well known in the community for years of teaching kids to dance and perform through the Medina Centre for Dance Art. Her passion for the Arts in Medina has evolved and expanded into the new Davis-Parks School of Arts. Some may not know that Kelly is also responsible for the local art displayed in the old Medina Hardware storefront on S. Court St. as part of her work with the Medina County Arts Council as president of the board. For Main Street Medina, we know Kelly as an advocate for Medina’s small businesses, and a past committee chair and board member … she still attends the Promotions Committee meetings today. Kelly makes sure that her students connect with the community through the annual Musical Theatre performances at the Square, recitals at MSM events, and performances at her studios. She is always creative, always inspiring, and ever-growing. That is what makes her our Visionary of the Year 2025. Thank you, Kelly.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - DENNIS HANWELL. Former Medina mayor, Dennis Hanwell has served our community for over 40 years. Main Street Medina is honored to have worked with Mayor Hanwell back when he served on the police force and through his four terms as Mayor of Medina. He was always a staunch supporter of our mission and was instrumental in developing a strong partnership between Main Street Medina and the City of Medina ... which is rare among our fellow Ohio communities. Since I started in 2018, I felt welcomed, heard, and respected, and I knew that he had the best interests of this community and its people at heart. We thank you for your willingness to listen, share your thoughts, and be opened minded and flexible to try new ideas yet hold fast to our roots, our traditions, and our heritage. Thank you Mayor Dennis Hanwell for setting the best example of public service. On behalf of the Main Street Medina's Board or Directors and staff, congratulations on your Lifetime of Achievements!
